Evgeny Kuznetsov's fresh start with Salavat Yulaev is off to a flying start! After a recent trade, the former Capital is already making waves, and fans are thrilled.
Kuznetsov has quickly integrated himself into the team, accumulating an impressive three points in his initial two games. This includes a memorable first goal, which came on Saturday.
The goal arrived 5:14 into the third period during a delayed penalty. Kuznetsov, seizing a pass from former Hershey Bears forward Sheldon Rempal, unleashed a precise wrist shot from the top of the circles, leaving Barys Astana's goaltender, Ádam Schéél, helpless. This pivotal goal gave Salavat Yulaev a 2-1 lead.
To celebrate, Kuznetsov performed his signature bird celly, a familiar sight for his fans.
This goal marked Kuznetsov's second of the season and his first since a December 17 game against HC Sochi while he was with Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
But that's not all! Kuznetsov also contributed a primary assist on Yegor Suchkov's goal just one minute into the game, showcasing his playmaking skills with a skillful, no-look pass.
Kuznetsov's goal proved to be the game-winner in Salavat Yulaev's 3-1 victory, his first game-winning goal since November 18, 2024, while playing for SKA St. Petersburg.
“It’s nice to see the ‘bird’ in green,” said Viktor Kozlov, Salavat Yulaev's head coach and a former Capital himself, as reported by Match TV. “Congratulations to everyone on the win.”
In his debut game against Avtomobilist Ekaterinburg on Thursday, Kuznetsov made his mark with a primary assist on an Alexander Zharovsky power-play goal, which extended Salavat Yulaev's lead to 4-1 just 18 seconds into the third period.
“We’ve got a real talent now,” Kozlov commented, as per sports.ru. “He makes his teammates better and gives the other guys confidence.”
Kuznetsov himself added, “The goal was to not screw anything up, to try to fit in and play for the team. We even managed to have a little fun in the third period, which is crucial because you need to enjoy the game.”
And this is the part most people miss... Kuznetsov, a 2018 Stanley Cup champion with the Capitals, has been welcomed with open arms. The team even organized a photoshoot with a hawk to celebrate his bird celly, highlighting his popularity.
Kuznetsov, 33, previously played 15 games for Metallurg Magnitogorsk this season, contributing nine points (1 goal, 8 assists) in a limited role.
