A tragic event unfolded at a nursing home in Pennsylvania, where an explosion claimed the lives of two individuals and left many others injured. Construction teams are currently on-site, working diligently to clear the debris from the collapsed structure, as investigators seek to determine the cause of this devastating incident.
On Tuesday afternoon, the blast occurred, resulting in one resident and one employee, identified as 52-year-old Muthoni Nduthu, tragically losing their lives. The identity of the deceased resident has yet to be disclosed. The explosion sent shockwaves throughout the surrounding community, with reports of 20 additional people requiring hospitalization, including one in critical condition.
The local police chief, Charles Winik of Bristol Township, confirmed that after extensive searching, all employees and the remaining 120 residents were accounted for. Survivors were moved to nearby nursing facilities for care.
Eyewitness accounts reveal the sheer force of the explosion, which rattled homes several blocks away from the site. The kitchen and cafeteria wing of the Bristol Health & Rehab Centre sustained catastrophic damage, with the roof caved in, walls blown out, and debris scattered everywhere.
Authorities have stated that the situation could have been significantly worse, thanks to the rapid response of police and firefighters from the region. Neighbors and hospital staff swiftly assisted in the evacuation of those affected, demonstrating incredible bravery in the face of danger. One person was even revived at the hospital after being resuscitated.
Firefighters faced extreme hazards, including heavy gas fumes, flames, collapsing structures, and even the threat of a secondary explosion while attempting to rescue individuals trapped beneath the wreckage. The explosion occurred just after a utility crew had responded to reports of a gas smell at the nursing home. PECO, the local gas utility, indicated that while they had shut off the natural gas and electric service to the facility, it remains unclear whether their equipment or the gas itself contributed to the explosion.

Musuline Watson, a certified nursing assistant at the facility, shared that staff had detected a gas odor over the weekend but did not consider it a severe issue at the time due to a lack of heat in that area. Following this incident, the nursing home, which had recently affiliated with Ohio-based Saber Healthcare Group, described the explosion as "devastating" and affirmed that personnel had immediately reported the gas smell to the local utility ahead of the explosion.
