A Family Getaway: Was a Turkish Weekend Worth It?
As a parent of two energetic toddlers, the idea of a long weekend in Turkey might seem like a daunting prospect. But, after a challenging few months, my husband and I decided to take the plunge and see if a short break could offer some much-needed respite. Was it worth it? Here's my take on the experience.
The Flight: A Chaotic Start or a Smooth Ride?
I was initially concerned about the four-hour flight with toddlers, but surprisingly, it went smoothly. The early morning departure meant we avoided the peak travel times, and the new security scanners at Gatwick made the process less stressful. The flight itself was uneventful, with the four-year-old being well-behaved and the two-year-old, despite refusing to nap, being more hyperactive than a sobbing mess. The key? A full flight of understanding parents.
Choosing the Right Accommodation: A Kid-Friendly Haven
For a short break, I opted for an all-inclusive resort, prioritizing relaxation and entertainment for the kids. XO Cape Arnna, with its stunning scenery and diverse offerings, was an excellent choice. The kids loved the chips, ketchup, beach, and slide, but their expectations were exceeded by the small waterpark and splash pad. The hidden Flamingo Beach, with its calm waters and toddler-sized play area, was a particular hit. However, the kids' club, while well-done, felt a bit depressing, with limited supervision and an overabundance of video games.
Catering to Both Kids and Adults: A Balanced Experience
XO Cape Arnna is a resort that truly caters to both children and adults. The adults-only area, with its pool, bar, and restaurant, was a welcome respite. The buffet restaurant offered a vast array of options, while the a la carte restaurants provided a more adult vibe. The time difference, with 7 pm in Turkey being 5 pm in the UK, allowed us to keep the kids on British time, making it easier to manage their schedules. While the a la carte restaurants didn't open until 7 pm, this was a minor inconvenience, and the kids enjoyed the burger and chips or chicken schnitzel and chips options.
The Verdict: A Well-Deserved Break
Despite initial doubts, the long weekend in Turkey was actually ideal. The short break provided enough mental respite to feel like we'd had a break from daily life, without being too long to get bored. The all-inclusive resort offered a balanced experience, catering to both kids and adults, and the time difference made it easier to manage the kids' schedules. While the kids' club could have been better, the overall experience was positive, and the resort's offerings provided a well-deserved break for tired parents.
Looking Ahead: Future Family Adventures
This trip has left me reflecting on the importance of taking breaks as a family. While it may seem like a lot of effort to travel with toddlers, the rewards can be significant. With a bit of planning and the right choices, a short break can offer a much-needed reset. So, to all the parents out there, I say: don't be afraid to take the plunge and explore new destinations with your little ones. It might just be the adventure you all need.
